Elounda Crete
The seven small communities which make up the popular area of
Elounda are located around 11km north of Agios Nikolaos.
The most popular and well developed resort is Shisma and along
its beaches are strung out many hotel complexes, cafes, bars,
restaurants and nightclubs. Not surprisingly, it is very busy
during the summer season.
Archaeologists consider the current resort to be on the site of
ancient Olounda or Olous and ruins of this early city have been
discovered under the sea. There are two monasteries close by
which are interesting places to visit.
The first is Agios Eratios and secondly Xiron Xilon. From
Elounda boat trips run to the isle of Spinalonga and its Cape. .
