Therissos Crete
Further to the south is the historic village of Therisos. Today
it is a beautiful, peaceful farming village but it was not
always so tranquil and, consequently, it holds a special place
in the hearts of Cretans.
Around 200 years ago Cretan freedom fighters entrenched
themselves here and fought violent battles with members of the
Turkish occupying forces. It was also from Theriso that
Eleftherios Venizelos proclaimed his revolt against the regime
of Prince George in 1905, subsequently called the Theriso Revolt
.
The Gorge of Therissos (or Venizelos Gorge) is 6km long with
impressive vertical cliffs and lush vegetation.
