Maleme, Crete
This popular tourist resort is about 17km west of Chania. A
medium sized village of around 550 people it is most famous for
its role in the Battle of Crete in 1941, in which villagers
prevented some 4000 invading Nazi parachutists from invading the
island by shooting them down. Sites include the German Cemetery
and the site of the Kafkales the ruins of a hatched grave
dating from the Late Minoan period.
