Arkalochori Crete
Around 33 kilometres from Heraklion and on the beautiful
internal road towards the southern coast is the village of
Arkalochori. Here, too, can be found Minoan remains. Examples of
these excavated sites can be seen at Galatiani Kefala and
Profitis Ilias.
There are also many charming churches in the region which house
beautiful religious paintings.
The area's name comes from the word 'arkalos' which is the local
Greek word for 'badger' and it seems that this area was a known
habitat for these animals in the past, sadly they are no longer.
Arkalochori town has an ancient market place and a Saturday
bazaar still takes place each week. .
