Kastelli Kissamos, Crete
The attractive town of Kastelli is around 36km west of Chania
and is the capital of Kissamos County. The town has developed a
significant commercial and tourist reputation and is built in a
lush fertile valley where olive trees and vineyards flourish.
The port of Kastelli connects Crete with the Peloponnese and the
island of Kithira. It is located on the site of the ancient city
of Kissamos which was an independent city with an important
harbour, Polyrrinia.
A castle was built here during Venetian times, hence the name
Kastelli, and its ruins can be visited today. Other interesting
things to see include the archaeological finds that are
exhibited in the former Venetian-Turkish headquarters and the
buildings and ruins of the Roman aqueduct at Kria Vrysi.
