Makrigialos Crete
Makrigialos situated 63km south-east of Agios Nikolaos, this
seaside resort is located on Kala Nera Bay a fertile area where
many fruit and vegetables are cultivated.
The bay possesses some glorious sandy beaches and this, and the
clear blue waters of the sea, make it a popular place for
tourists during the summer. Consequently, it has developed into
a busy but well organized seaside resort. In the village a
mansion from the Minoan Period was discovered and the findings
are exhibited at the Agios Nikolaos Archaeological Museum. The
Monastery of Agios Ioannis Kapsa is close to the village.
This fine building was constructed on a rock in a steep ravine
near to the famous Gorge of Perivolakia. In the late 19th
century, a reformed criminal took up the monastic life at the
monastery and spent his time renovating the building. The
monastery belongs to the Monastery of Toplou and on 29th August
there is a big celebration with feasting and dancing held in the
Monastery of Agios Ioannis Kapsa. . .
