The village of Kastelli Pediados
.
Located
some 36km south-east of Heraklion, Kastelli Pediados is the
capital of the County of Kastelli. The population of the village
is around 2,000 and their main occupation is the cultivation of
grapes and olives which grow in abundance on the plateau of
Pediada.
Close by the village a Roman cemetery has been discovered and,
furthermore, historians believe that the current village High
School stands on the ruins of a Venetian Castle (Kastelo) which
gave its name to the village. The excavation site of the ancient
city of Litou is only 4km away from Kastelli and is
archaeologically very interesting. .
